since those flowers are called Fairydusters sitting on an incredible red cinder carpet, I though I'd go all ShirleyTemple on this one..

I knew it! I had a feeling because of the dark ground (and I thought it definitely WASN'T mulch).
It's all of the little volcanic rocks. Have you looked at one really closely? It's really neat!
That park was one of my favorite places when I went to Arizona. I remember taking a panoramic photo of the mountain itself, having to rush back to the car, and then realizing on the drive out of the park that I had totally screwed up the photo. :XD:
